beautiful and enveloping, and easily one of the best books with multiple POVs I’ve ever read

Holds up on reread; honest and clear sighted enough to hold up to the present moment, too.
I loved reading the different points of view. A very interesting story that somehow didn't do anything I was expecting.

I loved feeling genuinely connected to these characters, and to feel the ways in which they adapted to their lives come off the pages. my only critique is that the second half of the book seems to move wildly faster than the first, often skipping many years at a time which was confusing at first.
last thought: loved Leah, hated Rachel. There is so much to unpack in this book

This book provides a fascinating perspective of how the cultural disconnect and colonial mindset of missionary work fails spectacularly in a world where life and wealth and spirit are controlled by forces older than civilization itself. Perhaps the God of Creation that we seek is indeed muntu - all that is here, the eternal cycle of life and death.
I'd been meaning to read this book for a long time before I finally did. I loved almost everything about this book, from the unique way that Kingsolver tells the story to the characters (especially Adah and Leah). It's just such an engaging and amazing story...definitely one of my favorites. Also made me want to read everything that Barbara Kingsolver ever wrote.
