Beautifully written.

#MMD Flight Pick for April 2019

I first read The Poisonwood Bible in 2011. At that time, I struggled through it but my heart wasn’t really into it. I rated it 3-stars. I re-read it for the ModernMrsDarcy.com Book Club in April 2019. I can’t tell you what the difference was but the second time around, I adored it — 5-star adored it. Some books absolutely deserve a second chance. I will never forget this book and how it taught me that there are many levels of what society calls “privilege”.

The setting in the Congo gave a very interesting and, for me, new background for this story about an emotionally abusive narcissistic father and the lasting impact on his daughters and wife.

The historically accurate sociopolitical events added depth and meaning beyond the family circle. (I have learned so much more history from reading historical fiction than I retained from high school). And the way the daughters evolved in their relationships with Africa and their childhood were very revealing.

This book contains every facet of life that you can imagine. So beautifully written and an overall compelling and informative story.

Slow to start but warmed up.
Good book about US family moving to the Congo and how their lives changed/progressed.
