This is the story of the doomed Price family and the long path to salvation told by its beleaguered female members: mother Orleanna and her four daughters, Rachel, Leah, Adah, and Ruth May. But this is also the story of their begrudgingly adopted homeland, Democratic Republic of Congo, its historic oppression, fitful birth and youth. The tragedy at the center of the story and its aftermath reverberate through the lives of the principal characters and are beautifully wrought by Kingsolver who does a wonderful job of evoking the stark danger and beauty of the environment.

My favorite Barbara Kingsolver, by far.

A slow-paced but interesting story detailing colonialism and faith. Every character had a very distinct voice representing a different postcolonial attitude which was fascinating. Knowing nothing about the history of the Congo previously this was also a very eye-opening read.
