This is for the audio book version, I tend to prefer audio books for memoirs.

I didn't know much about Gabrielle Union before listening to her memoir and I really enjoyed it. She is direct, funny, and relatable. She talks about her relation to race through being a Black woman, a Black actress, a Black (step) mother, and how it changed through the years.

Union was also very honest and real about her CW: rape. About her conflicting feelings about being grateful for certain things within a horrific situation. The fact that she hasn't and will never get over it, her moving between being a victim, survivor, victim, survivor.

Gabrielle is pretty open about mistakes she has made, what she wishes would have been done differently, owning her shortcomings in her relationships with other people. I feel like I say this with so many audio books, but it felt like I was sitting with a friend, her just talking to me.

I loved this book. Gabrielle Union was so raw, honest, and vulnerable in this book. She did not hold back one bit. The book evoked so many emotions as she took us on her journey. It is the perfect book to enjoy with a glass of wine. It feels like you’re engaging in conversation with a girlfriend.

As always, it's too hard to rate memoirs, but I did thoroughly enjoy this read.

Raw, honest, sincere. I have a new respect for Gabrielle Union. I've always thought she was a great actress who was eternally youthful. But this memoir introduced a strong, empowering, smart woman. Some may find it vulgar so beware if profanity and frank sexual talk bothers you.... But I found that too be just another truthful part of herself.
