I’ve always been a big fan of Gabrielle Union. In my eyes she’s typically played strong characters which is something I’ve always admired. As I’ve gotten older and learned more about her and her character, my respect and admiration for her has only increased. This book only added to those feelings.

Gabrielle was raw, powerful, and held back nothing in this collection of stories. There was really no rhyme or reason to the pattern of the stories but it still somehow flowed because her storytelling is so compelling. She talks about her childhood experiences growing up as one of very few people of color, being a woman, being a woman of color, and navigating all of this in Hollywood as well. It’s funny, it’s sad, it’s thought provoking, and it’s provocative. I will most certainly be adding her other book to my TBR pile.

Easily one of my favorites of the genre. At times hilarious, at others heartbreaking, but always interesting and engaging. Hearing it in the author’s own voice on the audiobook was even better!

I opted for the audiobook format for this one. I enjoyed hearing Gabrielle Unions thoughts and opinions. There were times that her story was sad, funny, and genuine. There were other times where I lost interest. The book was good just not a wow. I think I am just not a lover of autobiographies. I am glad I listened to it rather than read it directly. Fans will definitely enjoy it. I recommend getting the audio version.

This is a book women of color should read. I love how her honesty shines through.

4.5 stars!

I really enjoyed this book (I listed to the audio version). Gabrielle was thoughtful & funny & WOW was she honest. I appreciate her willingness to show herself in a light that was not always positive. Some of the stories had me laughing and kicking my feet, while others we a lot more serious. She goes into detail about her SA as a teen, and how it affected her in years to come. I loved her stories about being a stepmom and raising the boys. The only reason I remove half a star is because the stories did not seem to have a good rhythm leading into each other, and some stories I was left wanting more.

Overall, would recommend and I plan on listening to her 2nd book very soon!
