I quite enjoyed this which if I’m being honest is a shock. I went into this thinking this was going to be my last Ben Alderson book. The problems I had with the previous two books didn’t appear here and I’m glad. I kept hoping the next book would be better and this one was. I felt like I actually got to know these characters and even grew to care for them which is something that I didn’t with the previous books. I will admit that somethings that were said in the beginning did throw me off and I’m still confused by them even after finishing the book.
I was just really confused and got a little bored. I don't think it's a bad book. I'm just not too big on werewolves/things like werewolves. I do wanna try reading it again at some point. I love the Darkmourn series.

Oh man, I don’t know. This author clearly has some talent and the ability to craft really interesting characters and worlds but nothing quite came together or made sense. There were times it felt like he wrote out multiple versions of the story and then just smooshed them together randomly regardless of consistency in plot or character motivations. Pacing was off. The middle dragged out forever and flashbacks in time kept happening after reveals that sapped any interest out of the content of them. Rhory and Calix were fine, but not enough to carry the story on their own. I usually favor standalones or loosely connected series but I think this one could have benefitted a lot from tying the three stories more deeply together, deepening more non-couple relationships and expanding the world in a more focused way. Like the previous book, any side characters of significant interest or the promise of showing more complex relationships just died instead. And everything that happened after the showdown at the estate was mind-blowingly bad. First of all, the story was essentially over, why were there two hours of audiobook left? Second of all. What? Calix had to go…. why? He clearly didn’t know if vampire dude was making him or he was choosing to go. Vampire dude didn’t know if he was making him go or Calix was choosing to go. Rhory…. you get the idea. That was all incoherent, overwrought and bad. Took this from fun if you don’t think too hard to very nearly a dnf at 95% of the way through. Just. Why?

This book. I am barking, foaming at the mouth, screaming. This fucking book.
It was so good and I loved every second of it. Rhory and Calix are my loves and I wish them nothing but happiness.
Rhory's husband was a POS and I hated him so much. How dare he do the things he was doing and then changing not only Rhory's memories with Rhory's mother but also changing EVERYTHING about Rhory's father's guard.
He deserved what was coming to him and I was really happy to see Jak and Marius again. I'm glad they stopped being bitter and helped out. Also the way they were acting like Rhory's parents a little bit at the end.
I adore all of these couples and I am so excited for the next book in this universe.
