I want to see you. And I want to look into your eyes and see you seeing me. It's all I have wanted for years. Not your body, not your sex. You.
My brain cannot really form coherent thoughts after finishing this. This one really just messed with my head in such a good way. I think this is the best volume in the Darkmourn series up until now, just because of how complex and unpredictable the characters are.
I also love the way love is not exclusively presented as a good and all-encompassing force of good. Ben shows us how it can be ugly, selfish, obsessive, and deadly. How love can and will breed monsters. And I appreciate him and his work all the more for this.
I also love how Calix wants Rhory, his Little Red, to find his own way and strength, to reclaim his own agency. Even though he aches for Rhory, Calix loves him too much not to let him regain his free will. And I love love love the way Ben writes Calix.
Also, the lore is just impeccably intertwined with the other stories and the characters themselves. I just adore the way everything makes sense. And the way I feel I have lived through centuries and witnessed entire races rise and fall into ruin.
I would give this 6⭐ if I could. I just wish January would come sooner, so I can start reading the next volume of the series.
