Genre & Tropes : paranormal romance x shifters x more or less second chance romance

A nice romance but not unforgettable either

It's complicated for me to review the Five Packs series because even if it's my guilty pleasure, I also spend a lot of time rolling my eyes when reading certain passages ><

I really liked the story and all the misunderstandings with the two heroes BUT I would have liked more details at the end, more twists and especially to see Annie's recovery in more detail ...

In short, a light paranormal romance nice to read but not unforgettable !

This was great! Justus is one of the more balanced MMCs in this series. He was just young and dumb at the beginning of the book. I love how we got to see more of the Last/First Pack and how their dynamics work as well as learn some more pack history. The plot of the series did not move as much as I thought it would in this book. But the book by itself was a wonderful story with well developed characters. I wish their had been more of a scene where Annie sat down and explained/worked through her past with Justus. But I also understand the dynamics of their duo, and I don't think that truly matters to their happiness as fated mates or as individuals. I hope this series continues on and the overall plot moves more. I feel like their are still so many loose ends that need to be tied up.

For the first twenty percent of the book, I was not on board with this being a story for me. BUT because of the trust I have in this author, I pushed on. Hear me out.

With rejected mates, I'm used to drawing a line on whose side I'm on almost immediately. Justus wasn't a bad mate. At every turn, he tried to woo his mate. He cared deeply for her happiness and was excited to have found Annie. Unfortunately for him, fate had already deeply wounded Annie, and his care wasn't received well because she physically and mentally could not handle a mate. She was barely even able to stand being in her own skin due to trauma growing up.

And my inclination was to be mad at Annie for being so fearful and seemingly ridiculous, but I couldn't. She was absolutely overtaken by fear and irrational thoughts, and knowing how my own head is a traitor to my mental health and wellbeing, I just couldn't be mad.

So where did this leave me? Wanting to stop. lol Like I said before, I kept faith this talented author could reel me back in, and boy, am I ever glad I kept that faith and pushed on.

Justus is a big sweetie. Even in his anger, which was brought on by bruised pride and the sting of rejection, he still cared for Annie. He left her alone because that's what she wanted and also because his ego had taken a hit, but he checked on her from afar. Annie kept surviving but definitely was not thriving.

The rest I'm going to have a hard time putting into words, so you'll have to read for yourself, but these two came together beautifully. Justus was patient and considerate after he realized his mate had been traumatized. In his safe shadow, she learned how to dampen that nasty inner voice and co-exist more peacefully with her inner thoughts and her wolf. I'll leave with this quote because it encompasses Annie's journey and how proud I was of her progress:

"I wasn't stolen. I was stolen from, but I can take things back. My peace, my place, my power. My voice."

 Loved it

Excellent writing, a great plot and fast pace hooked me from the start. Justus is a heart-melting, caring alpha with a vulnerable side and I fell completely in love with him. Annie’s story broke my heart and took me on an emotional rollercoaster of a journey before delivering the sweetest of happily ever afters.
