“‘Did you ever think it would end this way?’ She asks me dreamily, her voice husky with exhaustion. I’m going to end up carrying her at least part of the way if I’m not mistaken. I won’t mind at all. ‘I didn’t even dare hope,’ I say. ‘Sometimes magic needs time.’ She smiles at me, her heart in her eyes. I smile back, my heart in mine.”
What I Loved: As someone who has suffered from panic attacks and anxiety, this was a really great representation of it. Annie and Justus were absolutely perfection 🖤
What Could be Better: The fact that I can’t live in my very own wolf pack that helps shoulder the burden of female existence.
Final thoughts: Easily the best one of the series that I’ve read!
Rating: 5/5 ✨
Things I liked:
- Annie’s character and her anxiety were represented so well. I thought the use of “the voice” was really interesting and illustrated how chaotic and intense that can feel.
- Justus had a really great development as a character. I could see how sweet he was as a young man, but he didn’t have the prudence and life experience to help him navigate things with Annie. I liked seeing him grow up and realize how big of a mistake he made.
- The Last Pack’s way of life was really interesting and I liked seeing the history of the shifters more.
Things I didn’t like:
- Less spice, obviously because of the characters. But I wish there was more of their life together after being settled and happy.
- It made me sad to see how isolated Annie was even among her friends. I wish we would have seen more of what her everyday life was like before meeting Justus again.

I don't think there are many authors out there doing what Cate is with the romance genre. She's singular and I eat up every new installation she publishes in this series. Her characters are so well fleshed out and real. They have flaws and imperfections and it makes reading about their love stories all the more satisfying. Also adored the world building when we learned about the Last Pack and their traditions.
I'm on my hands and knees begging for Kennedy and Tye's book pls pls pls.

The Wild Wolf's Rejected Mate is book 5 in the Five Packs series--and is quite possibly my favourite. This story perfectly balances more serious topics, such as dealing with anxiety and trauma, with lighter moments, such as learning to play and flirt.
Annie experiences a trauma in her childhood that affects every part of her life. Her fear and anxiety are a constant companion (in more ways than one) in her daily life. So when Justus first enters her life, she's completely unprepared for how her life will change.
As for Justus, he hasn't had the easiest upbringing either, but he had the support and love of his pack to help him grow into the man/wolf he's become.
I absolutely adored Annie and Justus and found Justus' playfulness to be a delightful addition to the range of heroes in this series. Despite the rejection that initially occurs between these mates, Justus is a cinnamon roll alpha, and I loved every minute of it. His desire to keep and woo Annie while not stifling her spirit was so sweet.
I won't say too much more because I think you should read it to discover how their story unfolds!
As for the writing, Cate C. Wells has done it again! Her writing style and storylines are so easy to sink into. The world-building is thorough and easy to follow, the characters are well-developed with personalities and flaws that feel realistic, and the romance is always steamy. With every book that Cate releases, she proves again and again why she's one of my favourite, auto-buy authors!
If you enjoy omegaverse romance or are new to the subgenre and want to give it a go, definitely read this book! Each of the books in the Five Packs series can be read standalone, so you can start here or from the beginning with The Tyrant Alpha's Rejected Mate.
Disclaimer: Thanks Cate C. Wells for the ARC!
