2.5 Stars. This one was very meh for me. Slow moving and not enough character development.

This was such a great second installment! Where the first book lacked in action, this book had so much more action! And more dragons. Mira was more likeable this time around and I enjoyed watching her grow and embrace herself more. I really enjoyed the subtle nods to some of our own political climate & issues and the authors take on it. I have to say, I’m not 100% I always understand what is going on or why something happens in this series. I do find myself a bit confused and re-reading passages to see if I missed something. But alas, I think it’s just me.

I've been waiting to come back to this series for a long time, and it was quick to pull me back into its rich, deep, and magical world. I was reintroduced to delightful and unconventional characters, and their layered back stories.
The story was evenly paced with action, drama, and character development. I liked the addition of small chapters being told from Aaru's perspective. It was even more tragic than I'd expected! While I truly loved some of the other stories the characters told, Mira was once again the star. I truly love her as a character, because she's strong, but so vulnerable at the same time. I was very, very proud of her choices and determination, even when she made mistakes. Her powers are extraordinary and I can't wait to see her grow into an even stronger young woman.
The romance between Mira and Aaru is one of the most tender and sweet things I've ever read. I adore them and how they support each other and see their vulnerabilities as strengths. This is the kind of romance that needs to be protected at all costs!
And then there's the ending... WOW. Given the events and power that Mira used at the end, I wasn't sure what the final book could offer in terms of scope and challenges.
Let's just say the ending will test these close-knit group of heroes more than ever before. I'm genuinely concerned about who will be standing at the end, but I'm also genuinely thrilled about seeing it all come to a close!

I think I waited a bit too long in picking up the second book in this trilogy. I had problems recalling a lot of the details from the first book. Unfortunately, I found the beginning of the book to be very slow. It literally takes Mira and her friends forever to escape and go somewhere else after leaving the pit. Once the action picks up, the story really moves forward. As shocking revelations are revealed, Mina must make a choice as to who she will become. The ending sets up the final book in this trilogy.
