3.5 stars.

Certainly original (or at least to me), but I found this lacking in some areas. I'm not a sports fan, so perhaps that's it, but I usually like sports books, so it shouldn't be a problem for me. There was just something strange about the way the characters all interacted. Enough that I'm interested. I'm going to keep reading, but I also can't say this blew me away. Interested to see what happens next.

Wow, incredibly problematic on so many levels. Casual slur usage, non-con shit. Plot all over the place, writing is mid at best. My phone corrected Exy to sexy and I'm sus. I don't have a clue how to visualize this sport. I will continue though, because the fandom compells me.

(No hate to any fans of this book, this is just my opinion).
I feel like I was gaslit into thinking this is good. Everyone who’s read this in my life loved it and I seriously do not understand. I hated this so so much and I’m writing this review to avenge my 14 year old self who had to silently HATE this book. The characters? Awful. Especially that one twin oh my LORD bro I understand your life is hard but you are like devil spawn. This is not representation, this is haphazard trauma porn. Exy makes no sense as a sport. The plot felt like she was drawing plot ideas randomly out of a hat. Was I given a crappier version of this than everyone else? Could’ve stayed on wattpad.

YOU NEED TO SUSPEND YOUR DISBELIEF. this book [series] is incredibly unrealistic on every level. the rules of this universe are arbitrarily picked from reality (like it's only set in ~2006 so that they have cellphones but not smartphones). if you want to immerse yourself, let reality go.

absolutely insane. nothing in this book makes any sense, neil is as dumb as rocks, and all of the other characters are so over the top it feels like parody.

and yet...

i go on to pick up the second one.

It’s a struggle to keep track of who’s who. And then it just ends.
