It's so poorly written, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. That said, it's such a fun and stupid time and you should read it. Just watch out, they hurl slurs at each other like it's nothing

3.5⭐️ The book centers around secretive and loudmouthed Neil and his rag-tag team of Foxes that play the fictional sport of Exy for Palmetto State University. This first book you get to know the characters and about their troubled past but I can tell there is a lot more to unpack. This book is really a set up for the next two books that explains the sport and the characters.

- Recommend?! = Yes get through this book the series get so much better
- Contemporary Sports Fiction, Romance/NA
- Physical

What the heck did I just read.
I really struggled to care for any of the characters.

there are some serious problems with this book??? i’ve heard it compared to the raven cycle so i thought i’d give it a read, even though i knew there was no way it would measure up (it didn’t), but it was still worse than i expected.
firstly, the writing is like something out of a fanfiction. which i don’t really mind, but i do wish it was better since this isn’t fanfiction.
also in line with this, instead of intricately woven relationship dynamics and found family interactions, everything has to be spelled out and explained for the reader because the writing can’t do it itself.
the characters are also deeeeply problematic. and not in a morally grey way, in a they should be in juvie way. wtf is it with the openly gay kid sexually assaulting neil and kissing him while drunk?? also all of the unnecessary violence?? this isn’t some fantasy world where that can be normalized, it’s “supposed” to be modern day. the whole thing just feels so over the top. the stereotypes in this were just very tiring, i mean wtf is going on with renee having to be the mom character i couldn’t handle it. the way addiction and drugs are talked about is also so inaccurate.
anyways it was a decent way to spend my afternoon, and i might read the other two books, but with the full knowledge that there’s serious problems.
i should reiterate i don’t mind the book including hazing or sexual assault, i mind that it’s not seen as a problem.

Wow this was quite bad- I did not find myself caring about the characters at all when the plot hinged fairly considerably on that. I can see why it works for people but... yeah not for me. Also far too many slurs which seemed to be just there for novelty
