I enjoyed reading this retelling of Hansel and Gretel. The artwork was striking and stark. I most enjoyed the notes by the author and artist! This was a Christmas gift that I will pass along to Lynda.

Hansel and Gretel by Neil Gaiman and Lorenzo Mattotti is a darker illustrated version of the classic fairy tale. The basic plot of the story did not change much from the original Grim tale. Unfortunately I couldn't enjoy the illustrations because they didn't format properly in my Kindle app and they were incredibly dark. I would be interested in viewing them in the actual graphic novel.
I did enjoy the story in all its grimness. It was a short quick read brought to life by Gaiman. Thank you to Netgalley and TOON books for the advanced copy. The opinions are my own.

I enjoyed it, but it did not seem very different from the original to me.

A fairly straightforward retelling with just a pinch of humour. I did enjoy how Gaiman didn't cop out and make the mean lady a stepmother.
The illustrations would be the only thing to set it apart from the masses, I think. Unfortunately, I didn't get anything out of them.

I am a fan of Neil Gaiman and knew I had to check this out. The story is very traditional. It does not veer too far from the original. The art work though is wonderful. It is dark and well placed in the telling of the story.

This was a nice easy sunny day read, although I am somewhat confused at it being labelled as a "retelling" which it really isn't.

Gaiman hasn't put a fantastical spin on this classic Grimm's fairytale and basically recounts the original story.

That being said however, the artwork is pretty chilling and definitely atmospheric.

I'm awarding it 4 stars not because this is a new version of Hansel and Gretel but because I love the original fairytale so much.
