Another great audiobook. Got a little dry during stretches of the book where it was basically “look at all the small town USA domestic bliss happening”.

As usual, really great characters and twisty plot. A little dark.

Well written- tough subject but liked and admired the characters perseverance and the interplay in their conversations.

The beginning was a little rough for me. It couldn't have been written any other way but it still took me a minute. This one sucks you right in!

I always enjoy reading Nora Roberts and this book was no exception. There is plenty of NR style romance along with a hefty helping of suspense thrown in. Zane and Darby are both new to Lakeview, NC but in different contexts.
Zane grew up there but escaped an abusive father and unloving mother with the help of his aunt Emily. He left to attend college where he obtained a law degree and began his practice in another city. He returns to Lakeview where is aunt and sister still live. He sets up his law practice and buys a house.
Darby is a northern transplant escaping an abusive husband. She had no specific destination in mind but decided to stop in Lakeview. She likes the town and its people so she decides to stay and sets up a landscaping business. She buys a house and settles in.
She and Zane meet through Emily and begin a relationship. As is to be expected in a Nora Roberts story the relationship eventually leads to marriage.
There are troubling events taking place throughout which can be tough to read as they involve child and spousal abuse. The characters involved run the gamut from despicable to lovable. NR is a master at character development and this book is no exception. Whether you loathe them or love them you know exactly who they are and how they think.
This is definitely one of NR’s better novels and I enjoyed every minute I spent reading it.
