It drew a bit longer than it should, and the prose, though beautifully crafted, every now and then got a little repetitive. That’s as far as my complaints will go, though.
It is a very traditional Gothic horror tale. I see why people insist on comparing it to Mexican Gothic, but I think that’s only because both are based in México and within the Gothic genre. But where Hacienda feels traditional in its execution, Mexican Gothic feels like a more modern take on concepts and ideas well established within the genre. Not a bad thing on Isabel Cañas’ work, in my opinion.
This is one hell of a debut, and certainly made for a good last book of 2023 for me. Yeah, it took me a bit longer than it should to get to this one, sorry.

I did enjoy the book for the most part. There were some parts that were a bit slow for me and almost lost my interest. The vibe was definitely the best part for me, and I made it a point to read it in the dark for extra spookiness. I feel like it was a pretty predictable read, but I definitely do think it is worth picking this one up.

This was just...okay. Honestly, it didn't feel like much stood out in the story. The plot was very slow-moving and not that much really happened. The romance also felt half-assed and I felt like it was forced into the book, so rushed and most of the relationship development is thrown in in the last couple chapters - it just didn't belong, in my opinion. I feel mostly apathetic because there was so little that happened and so little character development/character dynamics that I just didn't really care by the end.
