It lulls for the first third of the book or so while he's worldbuilding, but once things started to pick up, I quickly couldn't put it down. It's a very intense gritty fantasy (see content warnings for details - it's...a lot), and the characterization is so good that they feel like old friends. It does have a shock twist at the end, so if you don't like those, I'd stay away. It made me absolutely bawl like a baby for a good hour after I finished it. Fantastic book!

Whenever I tell a straight dude I enjoy reading fantasy, he always, ALWAYS follows that up with “Oh, do you read Brandon Sanderson?” For this reason + the length of these books + another reason that was my own personal bias, I was turned off from reading him for the longest time. But the FOMO finally caught up to me, and I decided my unwarranted prejudice was silly. I'd give him a try.

Unfortunately, this slapped.

Yes, sometimes the dialogue was a little juvenile and no, this was not the best fantasy I’ve read this year, but this was an enjoyable high fantasy done really well. Absolutely nothing wrong with a well-written good vs evil story with an inventive magic system, even if it does take you a whole week to read. And this series is about a gang of thieves full of distinct personalities led by my personal favorite, a sassy know-it-all. I was doomed to like this.

I’m excited to finish this series. You got me, Brando Sando. Well done.

This book was the first to get me out of a particularly long reading slump. It sat on my shelf for a very long time before I decided to pick it up again. This book is masterful in its writing, the plot is gorgeous and could be a standalone novel. The characters were incredible, especially Vin. I adored this book. Highly recommend, but the only draw back is the pace. Not necessarily slow, but definitely long in length.

It’s been a while since I’ve cried for a book.
The one character I didn’t want to die, died.
I feel empty
