It has been a while since I read Citadel of the Sky, and at some point (when the pentology is finished, I think) I want to read them back-to-back. Due to the latter, it took me a bit to get into the story and get the characters straight, but after that... In some ways I liked having the story taking place on two fronts. It made things more complicated given the absence of the phantasmagory. But, there's Twist, who remains one of my favorite characters, who can go back and forth between Jerya and Tiana. It seemed like this book is a lot about coming to terms with with what the characters want vs. what they need to do, and they're sort of a hard-headed lot. Trust and duty feature as well. I think having had Regents and then having so many of them die in the previous book shows that the Blood haven't adapted particularly well to doing things on their own, although Jerya tries very hard. It reminds of someone with severe anxiety who's off their meds, the Bloods being the person and the Regents being the meds. I am not sure how good an analogy that is, but as a person with severe anxiety, I know that how Jerya behaves in social situations is a lot how I am without my meds--Siandra is a safe person. Sort of like a movable safe place. So while it would have been better to send him rather than Yitherie, I can understand, from that viewpoint, why she didn't. It is, I think, also the reason Cathay needed to leave with the soldiers. Of course, given the developments at the end, Tiana may have another option, not that she needs anyone to protect her. Though she does need people to talk reason into her occasionally. This is turning into a vaguely odd review. I did like this book. While there is action, there's also character development as they start to think beyond their own needs (but at least in one case, needs are an important step to moving forward?).
