Kresley Cole never fails to give an amazing story. Even when writing about random characters, the story comes out fantastic. I still wish she would go back and give some of the original characters stories and not talk about these new ones, but I also see where the story is going. It’s an 18-going-on-19-book series but I suspect they were only be a handful more until the Accession, where I see the story ending after. To do so she’s writing about all sorts of characters to feature all dimensions and creatures of the Lore.
This book also brings insight to Nix in all of this and her rivalry against Orion, which we’ve read about before. I suspect the Accession will occur during Nix’s book (if there is one) and her love interest will end up being Orion. It would be a good twist in all this. This is all a theory, mind you, but I question is she went this route if she would stick with the mate thing. Nix being Nix would KNOW is she was mated. So maybe to end the series it’ll be a classic enemies to friends romance. No supernatural mate thing. OR she knows she’s mated and has been scorned by him in the past and that’s why the rivalry.
Again this is my theory after reading the book. I am interested for more of the series to play out and hopefully never end.
This book was a fantastic take on Beauty and the Beast. The Beast being Hell’s ruler, who upon taking the crown becomes more demon-like and beastly as time goes on until he finds his hellfire. The Beauty is a fairy princess (literally) who was banished to the human realm for her parent’s crime against the current fey ruler. She takes a deal with said king/banisher/fiancé and in doing so goes to Hell to make the beast fall to her charms for information.
Twist is, they’re mates. And he hates her and she hates him for the threat he brings to her kingdom. Fun match.
I loved Calliope. She’s so fiery, always on, funny and stands up for herself. As far as heroines go, she’s good. She doesn’t just fall for Sian for his “good” looks. There’s that other level of attraction…which only comes after half a book of dislike. There’s definitely a build up to their romance, but still gives us a couple hot scenes leading up to the actual romance. Because Cole never fails us there.
I loved how the book ended. There was no male rescue female here. Instead after he angered her she took her revenge on him and her fairy king and became a queen. There is of course a happy ending to all this but not after she kicks some butt.
I loved this newest edition to the Immortals After Dark series and I just can’t wait until Cole gives us more.

Dobbiamo darne atto alla Cole. È una brava attrice. Deve esserlo perché solo una brava attrice potrebbe guardare le copertine che le rifilano e dire: Oh si bellissima! e sembrare credibile.
♠ Comunque, ho iniziato questo libro con aspettative basse, davvero tanto basse. Vuoi perché il libro precedente non mi è piaciuto per niente e non è riuscito a farmi interessare ai Morior, vuoi che di conseguenza non poteva fregarmene di meno di Sian e della sua storia quando ci sono ancora almeno 5 vecchi personaggi di cui mi interessa sapere la storia (Tera, anyone?), vuoi che il blurb mi ricordava pericolosamente la storia di Malkom Slaine, demone del mio corazon, e la cosa non mi piaceva minimamente. Insomma, aspettative bassissime.
♠ A livello di re-telling ho gradito moltissimo tutti i richiami alla versione Disney della storia, come lo specchio che mostra a Sian cosa fa Lila, il castello che cambia aspetto come se fosse vivo, il vestito giallo che lei indossa per cenare con lui, lei che fa amicizia con due ragni che sono praticamente la versione muta di Lumière e Tockings.
♠ Per il resto in effetti, la storia ricorda molto Dark Demon, ma almeno li Carrow era una tipa tosta con una personalità sarcastica e decisa, Lila purtroppo non lo è. Oh meglio, non si capisce che personalità abbia. Cioè, almeno Sian è il tipico maschio tormentato, tradito in passato che cova vendetta da millenni che poi ritrova la sua compagna destinata e decide di vendicarsi ma finisce per innamorarsi – di nuovo- di lei. Calliope non è pervenuta. Tra l’altro arriva pericolosamente vicino all’essere una donna zerbino perché insiste nel voler credere che un giorno sposerà suo cugino, che lei sa averle mentito e averla tradita, solo perchè fin da piccola ha sempre voluto essere regina, poi però si arrabbia con Sian perchè gli dice che almeno lei è cresciuta ed è maturata. Eeeeeh, dove? A tredici anni viene esiliata e mandata a vivere nel regno mortale ma che lei sia cresciuta in mezzo agli umani non si capisce minimamente. Ci dice che si è laureata in un sacco di cose, che ha letto tantissimo e sa costruire cose (bellissimo quando costruisce la trappola per Sian e lo catapulta nella lava del vulcano) però queste sono tutte cose che lei avrebbe potuto benissimo fare vivendo a Sylvan. Per 11 anni lei non ha mai visto film? Mai visto serie tv? Mai fatto nulla? Quant’è improbabile questa cosa? Tra l’altro non viene neanche spiegato come abbia fatto lei, da sola, a tredici anni a sopravvivere senza cibo, senza un tetto sopra la testa.
♠ Detto questo, devo anche dare atto alla Cole che in quanto a World-building non è seconda a nessuno. E almeno gli avvenimenti che accadono in altri libri, prima o poi vengono ripresi e spiegati (la morte di Gourlav nel torneo di Abaddon, per esempio) quindi, direi che non siamo ancora ai livelli dei primi libri e i morior continuano a non stuzzicarmi minimamente ma è stato un salto in avanti rispetto al precedente.

Lui: “I’d be happy to get fucked. Are you offering? If so, I’m accepting.”
