First of all, please check trigger warnings because this one starts out INTENSE! Overall, I enjoyed aspects of this book but, ultimately, wished that some areas had been fleshed out a bit more. There were also some elements that seemed unrealistic or needed better explanation (e.g., apparently Jake is a therapist now and knows how to help people with PTSD...no). As a psychologist, when doing exposure therapy, or even when doing trauma-informed therapy, you don't just throw someone back into their trauma and "hold their hand." You need to teach them the therapeutic skills first, assess subjective units of distress (SUDs), and  reduce the anxiety...this needs to be done with a PROFESSIONAL, not your boyfriend that you kind of don't trust because he lied to you for several years to "protect" you. Also, why do male characters feel the need to leave the female character in the dark? Don't get me wrong - I will still be continuing on with the series and do think Pam Godwin's writing is good.

I think this was the most disgusting book I've ever read. Yes, this may be "dark romance", but that does not make the things that happen okay. The relationship is very, very toxic and the "therapy" he puts her through is outright appalling. The biggest issue I have - his behavior is not at all addressed and the
book ends with them being a happy couple (and them being portrayed as a healthy couple. Nothing was healthy about that).

Not no mention most of the plot is entirely unrealistic, but that's the smallest issue.
I'd suggest you don't read this book, but if you want to, please, please look at the trigger warnings closely and know that what happens is probably worse than what the warnings suggest, this is intense.

this was intense! if you want something angsty with a lot of wild turns, this book is a solid read

why not more stars? it's all jake's fault. he made some really questionable and unhinged choices that didn't sit right with me, especially when it came to his handling of conor's ptsd. 3 stars purely bc it was written well

The first chapter of this book is good and then it rapidly goes down  hill. To put it simply, this book is just a bouquet of abuse. Sexual, physical, and emotional. This book glorifies manipulation and control, while oversimplifying PTSD and other forms of complex and long term trauma.

The main male character is a self-absorbed 22 year-old prick who knows nothing and thinks he k owns everything. Despite the fact that he claims to love the main female character, he does not respect her at all. The only boundary of hers he respects and doesn’t push is the one he doesn’t have a sexual fantasy about. In the manner of a week and half, him and his BDSM sexual techniques called “therapy”(that he devised from some light Googling) cure years of horrific trauma while insulting and looking down on actual therapy practices and techniques. And the small portion of abuse that is presented to be horrific is even told in a sensationalized way.

On top of all this, the plot outside of the relationship is so convoluted and unbelievable. Somehow every single character in this story only manages to jump to the most extreme “solution” to their problem. I will not be reading the others in this series.
