Really deft and savage poetry, and a pretty incredible blend of the fantastical with the scientific. This definitely needs more than one read to unpack all the layers — I feel like my ability to read poetry smartly has degraded pretty seriously. In any event, this book is vividly alive and doesn’t shy away from any sort of hard feelings. Sharp and human.

Humanity as emotions, as systems, as code, as consciousness. Choi does it all, and she does it with a rawness and bitterness that's elegant and unafraid. Perhaps my favorite book of poetry of the year. And I'll be recommending this for years to come.

“There are only so many parallel universes
that concern us. In one, he isn’t dead.”
Introduction to Quantum Theory

“Last winter, when we finally kissed under flourescent lights, that was the seed we pressed between the ground’s lips. Then I laughed when the sky collapsed into pathetic rivers. Then I drank the dirt through my hooves, and liked it. Then I ate all the sun I could find.”
PERIHELION: A HISTORY OF TOUCH

“And though it’s probably true that the worst memories are the strongest,
I admit I don’t remember much of the months after, except the neon,
ricochet, the orange smell of the street cleaners, my body’s ugly sounds,
staying up to watch the sun re-hinge the balcony’s angles. ”
Perchance to dream

“Nothing is more frightening than looking
and loving what you see. ”
SHOKUSHU GOUKAN FOR THE CYBORG SOUL

"If people will not buy a song, must be because of patriarchy.”
THE CYBORG WANTS TO MAKE SURE SHE HEARD YOU RIGHT

“I know, to keep
my loved ones drowning
or dead.”

Some of these hurt, being a human really hurts some days. The sci-fi/ robotic elements are so great and then you start thinking about how women in sci-fi are so often represented and it makes it hurt all over again. Definitely a collection worth contemplating, and revisiting.
