This one started out so strongly. It had a great premise, kind of reminding me of the movie, The Strangers, (which I actually think was one of the better horror/scary movies of more recent years), but it took a weird turn, then just went completely off the rails.

Wen is the adopted daughter of her two dads, Daddy Eric & Daddy Andrew. They are on a trip to a cabin out in the middle of nowhere, (well not NO where, but a couple of miles from the nearest anything) and it is supposed to be their little getaway.

In comes Leonard, larger than life, creepy as heck sounding and yeah, I was pretty excited to see where it went.

After his 3 cohorts join in, and trap the original family inside said cabin, and gain entry, that's where it pretty much loses me. I just didn't care for how the characters went after that.

And that ending??

I will still read Paul Tremblay's works, because I have enjoyed others by him, this one just should have been left behind.

I wanted to read this before seeing, 'Knock at the Cabin'. It was good, but the ending wasn't very satisfying in my opinion. Definitely even more excited to go see the movie now that I've read this!

Its hard to write the end of the world AND make us care about the people in it. I enjoyed this more than the other “End of the World and Family on Vacation Away from Civilization” book I read recently, Leave the World Behind. But that’s not saying much. Was hoping for more from Tremblay but wasn’t entirely letdown either.

I went into this book blind and picked it simply for the title and the author. About 10 mins into the audiobook I realized this book is what inspired the movie Knock at the Cabin. I remember liking that movie(I saw it in theaters when it was released and then never again), so I continued on.

I’ve read or listened to quite a few books after having seen the film adaptations, and usually I’m still entertained. But for some reason, having seen the movie before listening to the book kind of put a damper on the suspense in this book. But I don’t think that’s the only problem. I think the pacing was just not great in this book.

We were about 25%, or 2.5 hours through the audiobook before the plot truly began. The first 25% provided a lot of context about Wen and how she came to be with her Dads which was important, but I think it just dragged on a bit long.

Once the initial shock of the major plot was revealed, it just felt like not a lot happened. It was just a back and forth of the “visitors” to the cabin emphasizing how important their mission was, and Eric and Andrew not believing them. Over and over. What was going to happen was laid out at the very beginning of the book in great detail, so nothing was very shocking when it actually came to fruition.

And I’m torn about how I felt about the end. I’d rather not spoil it but I’m just not sure I liked the ending.

I will continue to read Paul Tremblay because I’ve really enjoyed other titles of his that I’ve read. This one just wasn’t for me.
