This is the first book in the series that is technically a novel, though it would be more accurate to call it a series of interconnecting stories happening in chronological order.

While there is an overarching “plot,” nothing in this novel feels self-contained or is resolved by the end. And for all that this world is vivid and the characters lovable, the author gets so derailed in detailing every scene that it starts to bog down the narrative. For example: There’s a significant chunk of a chapter dedicated solely to monarchs discussing what to do about Ciri. I love political intrigue, but I honestly don’t think we need the full minutes of the board room meeting.

But gosh I loved that chapter in Kaer Morhen. Move over Geralt. Eskel is my new favorite Witcher. Too bad the Netflix show did him dirty.

I have a feeling that I rated this book like I did because I didn't read The Last Wish first. The author is very detailed but will sometimes leave references to things you can't know without reading that book first. Luckily I watched the TV series, but there are differences between them. I read in the order that I did because this is technically the first book and came in a box set that way. In short, my recommendation is to definitely read The Last Wish first. I think my rating would be higher if I had done so.

Meh. I was interested at first but it just felt like it kept going on and on and on. Might try another book later in the year. Maybe.

I've watched the tv series, and I'm already familiar with most of the content up until here. I already really like the characters, and I'm very invested in the story, that's why this was a 4-star experience for me. If this wasn't the case, I think this counts as a 3-star book, which, for me it normally means I won't continue with the series because there are so many 4/5-star books I'd rather read. But in this case, I'm happy I watched the show to make me want to continue with it.
When I watched the series, I didn't think I'd read the books, but I missed it so much, and I terribly wanted something that felt like watching The Witcher. With Henry Cavill leaving the show, I don't have much hope for the rest of it, so I thought the best thing to do was to read the books.
The show is not perfect, and I get people's issues with it. But it has a special place in my heart because it gave me all the nostalgic tingly feeling I got when I first watched Harry Potter, LOTR all those years ago. To be honest, I always crave that feeling, I constantly chase that high, but they hardly ever make movies/series like that. Adaptations are either so bad that you want to gouge your eyes out for having watched even one episode (Shadowhunter
