This book tells McCourt's life in a Poverty stricken Ireland. The characters that populated his life leap off the page with real animation. There were times when I would laugh out loud and times that were unutterably sad. It was a real pleasure to read
slow-paced
A sad tale, many twisting and depressing passages throughout the cold existence of McCourt in Ireland. Morose, but ultimately rewarding and hopeful.
I read this book the summer before my senior year of high school and proceeded to plagiarize the shit out of McCourt's phenomenal introduction to his memoir. You know--the:
"When I look back on my childhood I wonder how I managed to survive at all. It was, of course, a miserable childhood: the happy childhood is hardly worth your while. Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood."
Our personalities are shaped in those places where we've been twisted, beat, bent and survived. As far as I'm concerned, Frank McCourt is Iron Man. Beautiful story.
Oh, and for weeks I thought in an Irish brogue thanks to his writing style.

Such a fantastic book. I had previously read Angela's Ashes in high school, and this time around listened to the audiobook narrated by Frank McCourt. Both times I was sucked into the story - Frank tells about his growing up in Ireland with humor, honesty, and love.
ok so this is one of the most depressing books I have ever read. It won't make you cry,but will paint a picture of a childhood in poverty and alcoholism. This book is wonderful and devastating at the same time.
Another "it was ok," book. I really don't understand why this got the accolades it did. I know it was a true story and yet I just could not care for the people in the book. The narration seemed so far removed. I don't know. Don't think I'll continue the story in 'Tis...
