Artemisia of Naimes is one of the Gray Sisters, and her dream is to stay and tend the dead forever. However, life has other plans for her. She ends up becoming linked to a revenant, and must figure out where the Old Magic is coming from before disaster and tragedy occur.
This was easily one of my favorite books that I've read all year. I enjoyed Artemisia as a heroine, because she was so real. She had times where she was afraid, but her thoughts were pragmatic and even in danger, she did not hesitate to harm herself in order to save others. She is witty, self deprecating, but also quite insightful. She is a main character that I admire wholeheartedly.
The magic system was simple, yet detailed, and was interwoven perfectly with the religious aspects of the novel. I really enjoyed the interactions between Artemisia and the other characters, especially the revenant. I definitely will be preordering the sequel the instant it is announced!

I don't know, I think Margaret Rogerson is really good at writing just want I want to read.
"If there's one thing I can always rely upon, it's the reassuring dependability of human idiocy."
In Loraille, the souls of the deceased are in constant danger of possessing people as thralls unless the Gray Sisters, put them to rest. Our story follows Artemisia, an aspiring Gray Sister who would much rather deal with the dead than the living. When her convent is attacked, Artemisia is forced to use an ancient and powerful relic to protect those in her life. However, the relic is that of a revenant that easily could possess her and cause far more damage than the ongoing attack. Through Artemisia's journey, she learns long-kept secrets and evil mysteries that force her to partner with the revenant to use its power to save the world. The world that revenants historically have sought to destroy.
Margaret Rogerson continues to be one of my favorite YA fantasy authors. Artemisia and The Revenant are such an unlikely but perfect match that I would definitely consider being possessed if the revenant would remind me when to drink water. This book is 100% Vemon but set in medieval times with ghosts and nuns which IMO is a big selling point for me. The setting is dark and creepy with locations in various churches, crypts, and creepy forests. The characters are the supreme highlight of this book, especially with the banter between our two main characters. There was also zero romance in this story which I found refreshing for YA Fantasy, and it certainly would not have fit our MC. The reason for 4 stars and not 5, is that the pacing in the book was slow in the beginning. I really loved the open-ended conclusion in this book, and I am hopeful that there will be a sequel in the future.

Absolutely outstanding.
I think that Margaret Rogerson is one of my favourite authors, her stories are amazing and absolutely wonderful reads.
The world building and characters are spectacular and as usual sucked me right into the story.

Another great fantasy book. I love the quick, cataclysmic endings and how the world building is so vast, but she narrows the books down to a small glimpse that allows us to wonder if the is more to come or if the characters live out the rest of their lives in peace.
I loved this book. I was slow to get into it but I really enjoyed the world, and the main character Artemesia. All of the characters felt incredibly real and I loved how slowly all of their motivations were revealed. The way this author handled a lot of difficult topics also struck a chord with me. I'm very much looking forward to book two. Siiiigh. I wish I had waited until they were both out to read book one because now I'm going to be impatient for two years. Also, the author herself describes it as medieval venom, and that is a great description.
I wanted to love this book so much but it was just okay. If it wasn't for the revenant's witty banter... and it being my spirit animal now... I would have probably quit the book before halfway.
