I have never had to rewind an audiobook so many times... this story just couldn't keep my attention at all. That said, I do think that this is quite a unique story and I did end up enjoying it overall. Just a very quick and easy read. Also, this YA fantasy has zero romance elements, who would've thought that was possible?!
I really enjoyed Vespertine. It left me with such a warm, satisfied feeling. It's different from any YA fantasy I've read recently, with a protagonist who is a young warrior nun and perhaps on the spectrum, found family and new friendships, wonderful world-building that feels like 15th-century France with deadly ghosts, and some very fun snarky dialogue. I loved that this completely works as a standalone, and yet still has me eagerly awaiting book two in the series.
Vespertine was just as good the second time around! It's unique, it's fun, and it's spooky, I loved it. I still love Artemisia, I still love Revenant, I like Marguerite, I kind of like Leander. I loved the friendship and banter between Artemisia and Revenant, even if he pretends to hate her.
Happy December I am in a reading slump, as they say.
The concept of this was sooooooo what I love, but it was also sooooo YA (and I cannot fault it for that, that's where I found it). Demons are a girl's best friend (I am oversimplifying it). Nuns when they slay?

loved this so much !!! this author is one of my favorites now; I've liked all of her books so far a great deal. She weaves fantastical elements, worldbuilding, magic systems and the like so well with character building and relationships. It's the first book of hers that doesn't include a romance plot and it wasn't less strong for it, which was delightful to me. I also loved the main character as she was very autistic coded and suffered from ptsd, her sensory sensitivities, flashbacks and triggers where very realistic and relatable. I thought the pacing was great, nearly perfect except for a big final battle at the end which concluded a bit too quickly and easily for my tastes, but other than that it was superb. There were also humorous moments in this book that really worked, and I enjoyed all the interactions with the side characters. Absolutely frothing at the mouth punching the walls gnawing cement throwing my arms up in despair at the fact that book 2 isn't out yet mlskjfmsd

Seriously considering finding an evil spirit to possess my body and remind me to drink water
4.5 stars!! OMG. This was INCREDIBLE, especially considering that I started and gave up on this book three separate times in the first 10%. The beginning is suuuuper slow and I was wary about the fact that I kept reading reviews that said there was no romance in this, which I usually don’t enjoy. BUT WOW. I loved this so much!!
All of the characters are fantastic. I loved Artemisia, the revenant was FRICKIN PHENOMENAL omg so funny and definitely the highlight of this book. I also loved the side characters Marguerite, Charles and Jean (and eventually LEANDER trust me I was shocked as well)
I am seriously so excited for the sequel to this!
