i was enjoying the book but i was just not in the mood for that genre and going through a book slump

4.25 stars. I really liked this. The relationship between Artemisia and the revenant is one of my favorites

4.5/5. I highly enjoyed this book and would recommend it for fun reading. The protagonist’s and the revenant’s characters are well written, and I enjoyed the bits of humor thrown in as their relationship develops. I hope the author continues this story in sequels!

"The revenant had devoured the populations of entire cities; it was also the entity who ordered me to eat my pottage."

"Revenant, attend me!"

Bookstagram is SLEEPING on this one!

Content:
Artemisia is training to be a Gray Sister, tasked with cleansing the bodies of the dead so that their souls can pass on; otherwise, they will rise as spirits with a hunger for the living.
When her convent is attacked, Artemisia defends it by awakening the relict of a revenant, a spirit of fifth order that could destroy not only her but the whole world. Wielding the spirit's power almost kills her- but only a vespertine, a priestess trained to wield a revenant, could save the world they live in. When an old and dark kind of magic starts to grow, Artemisia realises that everything the was taught to believe might actually be untrue.

Review:
Guys, I'll say it again: you all are sleeping on this one! The plot, the characters, the development.. I completely fell for this book within a few pages! Let's start with the protagonist, Artemisia. She has always been struggling with human interaction, having difficulties interpreting emotions, mimics and her own body signals. Isolating herself from the people around her, she grew socially distant and unable to interact with other people. But when she awakens the revenant, he becomes a part of her- and also her ultimate alter ego!! Get ready for one of the funniest and most wholesome friendship between a human and a spirit, because this book made me laugh, cry and bite my nails at the same time.
Also, if you love fantasy, but you are sick of fairies and vampires (at least for a little bit), this is the perfect switch-up for your next fantasy book!!

I really enjoyed the world of Vespertine and the characters as well. I loved Artemisia's and the Revenant's relationship and how they learned to work together. I loved how she got a team of friends to help her along the way and I thought the variety of spirits and relics were very interesting, though I have a lot of questions about them.
Over all, though, a very good read.

I effing love Margaret Rogerson
