poignant and insightful, even made me chuckle at a few points. i love that baldwin has such a conversational approach, this whole book felt like a healing chat with a friend. this was my first read by baldwin and i can’t wait to delve more into his work!

I tried to read this a while ago and couldn’t get past the first few pages. I just wasn’t grabbed. I was still interested in giving it a go so I listened to the audiobook which was a better fit.

Baldwin was ahead of his time and yet this was lacking a female perspective and the religion was too heavy-handed for me to feel deeply about these essays. I’m definitely more interested in reading his fiction. Otherwise, the content is pertinent and incredibly incisive.

Somewhat rambling but gets to the point that love is the answer. The question is harder to articulate. A solution to the issue of color, which Baldwin suggests is contrived and not real, is within our grasp, if we are brave enough to confront history and deeply love as the answer. It is a worthy book to read.

A must read. This quote from the book struck me to the core:
A civilization is not destroyed by wicked people: it is not necessary that people b wicked but only that they be spineless.
