The Black House is one of those novels where the story is just an excuse to write but the setting is the real plot. The Isle of Lewis, the tradition of hunting guga and the trip to An Sgeir - all these get etched onto your mind so forcefully that their harsh cold beauty is going to haunt you forever.

This is the first book of Lewis Trilogy. I'm eager to read the other two books.
This is not a book about likable characters or a pleasant location. The story and the setting is grim. The writing keeps you reading. You want to go where this author takes you.

This is not the usual genre of book I would normally choose, but living on the Isle of Lewis this series of books is a compulsory read for lots of people. What I liked about it was the familiarity of the setting and the people. May has captured this very well. By the end of this book I enjoyed it, but half way through quite honestly I was a little bored. There were too many 'cliff hangers' about the central character that were unnecessary for the plot line. The murder being investigated very quickly became a sub plot and during the book I found this frustrating but on the last couple of pages it makes sense as to why this is the case. Having said that I enjoyed it and would read the second in the series in the future at some point.

It's not that I disliked the book, it's just that it wasn't what I expected. For me, there was too much time spent on the history of the main character and not enough on the murder itself. I understand that this needed to told, I just wasn't prepared for it. There was also a lot of descriptions of the surroundings which weren't helpful as I am far, far away. I did do a google search of the island to give me a sense of place which was very helpful. This will not prevent me from reading the next in the series.
4.5 stars
I really enjoyed The Blackhouse, a book with a gripping plot, multi-faceted protagonist and deeply atmospheric setting. The writing was engaging, and I felt immersed in the story, which shifted from past to present. Though the ending wasn't as spectacular as I had hoped, given the intensity of the built up, I enjoyed this book quite a bit and would read the others in the series as well. Recommended!

This is the best mystery/detective book I have read in quite some time. Well written, fully fleshed out characters, and best of all a crime that I didn't solve before hand and yet wasn't a 'oh hey that guy over there that you didn't know about, he did it!' reveal. I will be reading more of these, for certain.
