I chose this murder mystery for a little recreational reading and got a lot more than I bargained for. A simple (?) murder becomes a look at a culture I knew nothing of in a place where life is often harsh. I had never heard of this specific island, but now know it is part of the Hebrides. I was fascinated by the history of the place and the fact that they still speak Gaelic.
Strongly recommended for those that like a little meat with their murder.

Totally unexpected ending. This was my first Peter May book and I'm glad he writes series -- can't wait to get to the next instalment of the Lewis Trilogy.

I was expecting a police procedural/mystery which I got. I mostly enjoyed the background color of the island and its people. The detail was thorough and well written. It could have used a firm editing as it seemed like it dragged in too many places. That and the fact that it felt like it veered into soap opera territory, particularly towards the end, cost it a star. Not a bad read, but not an enthusiastic recommend either.
