Zillah is a Free mixed race woman who is working at a variety show playing a caricature of an African woman for the entertainment of white Londoners. She’s never put much thought into who her performance was hurting because of her drive to support herself but when she sees another woman being abused by the show’s owner, she feels compelled to help.

Be prepared for the apathy and outright cruelty some characters display if you choose to pick up this book. I took a few days of a break in the middle of reading to decompress because although I enjoyed the book, it made me feel Stressed. If you are extremely sensitive to the mistreatment of others, it’s probably best to skip this one. Racism, racial slurs and classism are clear warnings of what to expect.
