Jesus. How can so such a slim, quiet volume land so many haymakers? It holds such a steady, contemplative vibe while absolutely crackling with psychosexual energy. Dark and deranged without sacrificing a bit of beauty.

I decided to pick up Beauty and Sadness since I had a copy of Snow Country waiting for me when I got back from vacation, and as such was curious to see what Yasunari Kawabata's writing was like.

Its an extremely short novel of about 140 pages which I managed to finish it in about 3 days at a casual pace. Honestly, the book hasn't left any lasting impressions of me. Credit should be given to Kawabata's writing style as the novel has a wonderful flow to it

Having done some research and looked at some reviews, I agree that the novel seems to feed into the male gaze, Oki's broken character and his relationship with Ueno and Keiko are interesting but a feel forceful and stretched at times. The ending is a bit of a surprise but owing the novel's length can feel a bit forced. However, there are some seeds that are planted toward the start of the novel. Nonetheless, would only be obvious in a second reading.

another pretty story about an old guy defiling a young girl. sexy.
