I don't really know where to begin with this book. Unlike any other I've read, I think it touches on many different issues I hadn't really thought about before, at least not to the extent it addresses, such as our engagement with texts specifically what we consider "literature" and when perhaps our consumption of them may become problematic. Do we really know if The Navidson Record was real, or if Johnny himself is telling the truth in his narrative? Does it matter? Must we find some kind of truth in media to find meaning in it? For that matter, how are we reading the book itself?

I feel like I have too many thoughts to put in a coherent review. I'd say it'd be one of my favorites if it wasn't for the weird yet typical misogynistic attitude toward women that is present in the first half of the book (more or less). I really haven't stopped thinking about it since I finished reading.

This book is very dense but rewarding if you're up for it. Not a light read.

Weird, super creepy and weird. In the best way possible. I bought this because hell yes, experimental fiction, and I expected it to be good--didn't realise how good! I read this in a bit of a feverish state over five days and I'm so glad I did. The character reading along with me was frenzied and unable to get the book out of his head and I found that I was expecting for the manifestation of the monster to break the fourth wall and prove that I was just part of the story. I was so pleased that the trippy font and formatting choices proved to add deliciously to the story.

UPDATE 2023

Reading this for a second time was an absolute treat. I loved getting to analyse all the themes closer and think critically about all the layers of the story. Just as creepy the second time around.
