I was crying by the time I got to page 30. Nonfiction is not something I necessarily like to read, but I know I should read more of it. The Library Book makes that goal easy. Beautifully written, meticulously researched (I believe everything she wrote), and forward looking about an industry that many believe to be dying. I highly recommend reading this book.
Perhaps ironically, I waited to read this book until I could get it from the library. After reading it, I believe it deserves a permanent place on my shelves at home, and so I will have to buy it.

Lovely book about the history of the LA Public Library with a focus on the fire in 1986. I’m looking to stepping back into a library again soon.

This is the book for bibliophiles everywhere. It’s not just a sorry about a library fire, but about the library system, library wars, and the place that libraries hold in our society. It is a love letter to the houses of books that readers and non-readers alike can benefit from, and gather together for quiet moments in a public place.
4.75 stars.
Non fiction books aren’t normally what I enjoy - so the .25 is taken away for that.
Aside from not being my normal genre preference - this book was extremely educational and inspiring. I learned so much about the history of books, culture, and library’s.
It really makes you sit back and think about the impact of books.
A must read for book lovers.

This was both a love letter to libraries and a super interesting look at the LA Public Library Fire and the history of the LAPL. It was truly a joy to read, although at times hard to jump back and forth between stories. Definitely recommend it though!

If you love books, libraries and/or are just curious about stuff this is the book for you! While the burning of the Central Library in LA in the late 1980s is central to the story, you’ll explore the Dewey decimal system, book burnings through the ages, how libraries work, and why they should, you’ll also meet people work work at libraries, love libraries and or may be an arsonist. Terrific read.
