First in the Argeneau series.

I really liked this book for several reasons.

For one, they aren't typical vampires, but at the same time the changes that Lynsay Sands chose to make to change them from typical vampires isn't annoying like the way Twilight changed vampires.

These vampires, if one could excuse the term as it is the best description for them, don't sparkle in the sunlight or anything crazy like that thank goodness. They are like normal people, except they need blood to survive. Why? Because the blood that they ingest replenishes their own supply and can affect them deeply. For example, drinking from a person with a lot of alcohol in their system is a very effective way to get a drunk vampire. The blood they drink affects them.

This was also a funny book as well. I love how real Sands writes the vampires, even going so far as to put them in Spider-Man pajamas. It is a very interesting and amazing difference than the way most vampires are written.

I just overly enjoyed this book and I know that this review leaves very little to the imagination, but that is because I really enjoyed it and don't want to give anything more away.

The Story
Poor Lissiana (try not to confuse this with Lousiana) has hemaphobia and it's wreaking havoc in her life. I mean, everyone else can just suck down blood from a bag. She just isn't fitting in and it's embarrassing how she keeps fainting anytime she sees blood. So Mama has a plan on how to cure Lissi. She kidnaps a psychologist for Lissi for her birthday.

The adventures begin with an intrigued shrink-held-prisoner and all the birthday party guests gathered 'round as they maneuver, manipulate, escape, and love.

The Characters
All but two of the characters are great. A very nice bunch of peop…vampires.

My Take
Sands has an interesting premise for how vampires originated and her characters are mostly sweet people but its execution was childish and the reading was tedious; I was moaning every three or four pages at the inanity of the writing.

Sands is so not on my continued reading list.

The Cover
I think someone messed up and used a cover from another book. It has a guy in a tux and untied bow tie with bite marks on his neck framed by lipstick but no one in this story ever wore a tux…duh…

Heh. A homophobic vampire. A crusty but misunderstood uncle. A guy with a cucumber down his pants. Toronto. It's all win.

So many things went wrong in this book. I normally love vampire books and I’ve heard a lot about Lynsay Sands, so I was looking forward to this series, but this was hard to get through. I’m also fine with cheesy vampire books, but this wasn’t even an enjoyable cheesy vampire book.

Pros:
-Interesting storyline - vampire with hemaphobia? Sign me up!
-Not all blood = good blood. Vamps can get drunk/high if they drink from someone who is using
-Sands does explain how vampires came to be in the world
-I liked Thomas, he may be my favorite character from this book

Cons:
-Veeeery slow book. Especially the part where ALL of the cousins take turns coming in and have the EXACT same conversation with Greg
-Too many side characters. Clearly Sands was setting up characters for later books but did they really need to ALL be involved in every single little thing that happened?
-Lissianna is completely clueless. If you’re a vampire and don’t want humans to know about you, you should be keeping an eye out for people doing ‘typical’ things to kill a vampire because they’re probably on to you
-Why would no one tell Greg what her phobia actually was yet they still expect him to cure her?
-I wasn’t invested in the romance between Lis and Greg
-Why wasn’t Greg more upset about the fact that he was kidnapped TWICE?
-The audio version of this is HARD to get through (I didn’t let that affect my rating - if I had, this would definitely have been a 1 star)

An interesting start to the series. I became invested in this world pretty fast, and throughly enjoyed the first book.

A for effort: an interesting conceit on the whole vampire thing. Which is starting to wear thin in the whole paranormal genre.

It wasn't that good. The premise and the romance were promising, but the execution fell flat. There were too many scenes in this book that slowed down and at times stopped the story from moving forward. Sadly, too many times tension and suspenseful scenes were cut off with seemingly unrelated details and passive narration. At other times it felt as if Sands' sole purpose was to reach a target word count. This book was disappointing, especially when the characters and their romance had so much potential.
