2024 reads: 23/250

bethany greene has never had a boyfriend, and she wants that to change, but as of right now she’s “too inexperienced” for her crush. jacob yeun has been dumped twice in two months, and wants to prove he can hold a longer relationship. they decide to start fake dating to help each other achieve their goals, but soon, the lines between real and fake begin to blur.

though i don’t miss high school at all, sometimes i just need a high school romance as a breather from the other books i read. so, this book came at the perfect time! this was a dual pov and i really enjoyed getting to know both characters through their own chapters. i really loved the discussions in bethany’s chapters about parental pressure (though not entirely intentional), sibling comparison, and feeling like a “late bloomer.” i can’t wait to read more from rebekah weatherspoon!

I did like this book. It shared a positive message about body positivity and there was a nice representation of an LGBQIA+ character and other diverse characters. being Asian myself, it was nice to see an Asian character.

Back in school, I was like Jacob as the awkward, nerdy one that did not really know how to interact with others. I had a very small group of friends like Bethany and her friends. Bethany and Jacob may not have came up with the idea to be together but they did make a cute couple.

While I did like them, I just never really became emotionally connected with all of the rest of the characters in this book. yet, as someone who is not the target audience of this book, I still felt like because of the positive message that it will be enjoyed by readers of all ages.

This book started a bit slow for me, but once I got into it, I enjoy it. The banter was hilarious, and the friendships were so genuine and warm.  Enjoyed both of their friend groups and liked that they both hung out with each. so cute book.

OOOOOO THIS WAS CAYOOOOT.

Bethany is known as "Cry Baby Bethany" and can't get a date. Jacob is newly hot (thanks, over-the-summer-glow-up) and has been dumped twice in a month, and can't keep a girlfriend.

Enter, a plan to fake date so they can learn to date AND be good at it.

It was so sweet. SO SWEET. I loved them.
