I've had this book on my shelf for years and I'm not sure I ever read it. I picked it up (again?) when I realized that the new book Raylan (and the series Justified) is based on the character who first appeared in Pronto and continues in this book.

The book is definitely classic Leonard. Great crime fiction. If you love the series you'll definitely love the book.

Not as gripping, and just plain fun, as some of his others. This one seems a bit too serious. I think he generally has a great, dry sense of humor. It's lackin in this offering.

The ending was so unsatisfying! What a letdown.

I said in a previous review that Elmore Leonard's novels are like a nicely wrapped package, and Riding the Rap is no different. The plot unwinds like a tight ball of yarn and hits you boom, boom, boom.

The dialogue is superb. Even better than Pronto. And if you're a writer, for this reason, you should read everything Elmore Leonard has written. There is no author out there writing dialogue better than Mr. Leonard.

Riding the Rap gets a solid four stars and is highly recommended.
