Very charming, abrupt, and emotional. De Beauvoir does a brilliant job at capturing what it's like to be a young girl and what it's like to be a young girl with other young girls as friends. This little novella was pretty heart-wrenching at times, and the language captured it all in beautiful simplicity.

I can respect the inherent beauty in a female friendship dictated by strong devotion, slight envy, need and want for happiness, fear of the passing of time, anger at the world.

As alluring as a newly published work about an intense childhood friendship is, there’s clearly a reason De Beauvoir chose not to publish this short novel while she was alive. It’s extremely personal, despite the pseudonyms, and if she had really wanted to pass it on to the world she probably would’ve just included these stories in her memoir.
