I had a lot of fun reading this book, and I really enjoyed the lore and the characters. I'd like to continue with the series (translate the rest, please)!

The best thing about being in a course made up of mostly international students, is that you get introduced to all kinds of books that you would otherwise never have come across or never have thought to actually pick up and read. and this is one of those books.
It's an amazing adventure story. I loved that the "bodyguard" is a woman in her thirties (if I'm not mistaken, about the age). I enjoyed the mythology and cultural influences in the story. And I also really liked the themes of fate and destiny that runs throughout the novel.
Overall, it was such a fun read for me. The only reason why it's not a 5 or 4 star book is because I found some part of the novel repetitive in its writing and that slowed down the usual fast pace of the book.

3.5 Stars
I enjoyed this book overall, though I did not find it altogether very captivating, for reasons I will try to tease out in this review.
The fantasy and action elements of this book are fantastic, but the best part of Moribito, for me, was its world-building. Nahoko Uehashi's experience in ethnology shines through this novel in the nuanced description of the world's mythology, history, storytelling, and cultural collisions.
That said, while I found the overall cultures described to be exciting, the individual characters were less exciting and nuanced - this excludes Balsa herself, who as a 30-year old female bodyguard that is both strong and empathetic without being particularly maternal, is fascinating as a lead character of a YA book. But the characters themselves were just not particularly surprising nor complex. This is forgivable in itself, but added to this, I think that introspection was used too often as a tool to advance the plot, and the prose itself was perhaps a bit plain for my taste.
So in the end, for me, while Moribito's simple storytelling isn't able to pull this book into the "great" category, the cultural/anthropological themes make this book a good one.

i just decided to read this bc of its cover. it's like i'm watching studio ghibli film x samurai champloo. i love the lore, the atmosphere and the adventure elements. there's a lot of telling but it was still pretty interesting, writing is very straightforward (ig bc it's a translated work and aimed at a younger audience). i wish it had a bigger plot tho so they could explore the characters' depth and the world the author built. i wanted to give it 4 but the second half wasn't as strong as i hoped it would be.

This wonderfully crafted story touches on coming of age feelings that I remember struggling with. The emotional undertones are subtle but very well written. I applaud world building accomplished in 248 pages. A gripping story for all ages.
