I really loved this book, being an avid convict history fan from NSW, though sometimes I'd remember it was essentially dead person fanfiction and I'd get a little weirded out all over again. But! I had a great time reading this book, even if I wish it had gone on longer.

I wish I could sit the author down with a high lighter and figure out exactly what bits were entirely fictional, and what had some hints of truth to them.

I do wonder how the author came up with the relationship with Mr Dawes, if there was some evidence to suggest their lessons or love was there, or if it was entirely fictional.

Honestly found this book pretty unbearable and think I can safely file Grenville away in the 'not for me' category. The writing was a bit forced and twee and I wanted Elizabeth to be more interesting than Grenville's portrayal. Like if you are going to take artistic license with a reimagination, make the most of it!

I enjoyed this historical novel set at the moment that Europeans arrived in Australia. I enjoyed that it was told from the perspective of a wife of a soldier posted there. The book demonstrated her lack of power and agency over her own destiny and how she managed to negotiate a role for herself despite this. It also explored the encounters with indigenous groups.
