I really really wanted to like this but had SUCH a hard time staying focused on it. There was quite a bit of humor in it and I found myself laughing in pretty much every chapter with a line here or there. The personality of the Count was amazing, and I could picture him in my head throughout the read. I also loved Nina and Sophia, but they didn't have quite the depth that he did.

Maybe the timing was wrong, or maybe I just wasn't as into it at the time. It seemed to drag for me and I was getting antsy to start something else. It wasn't horrible - I've read much worse - but just wasn't a favorite...

Absolutely loved this on audio! Who knew that the story of a single man, largely told within the confines of one hotel over a 30 year period could be this riveting?

Wonderful - I wish I could give it 10 stars. A perfect novel. Count Rostov, held under house arrest in a luxury Moscow hotel for decades, is so alive that it is hard to remember he is a fictional character. It’s a long time since a book has kept me reading in the middle of the day as if nothing else mattered. I waited for years before reading this book because I didn’t think it could live up to the hype, but it does, and then some more.
