A great story, but I think it would appeal to older children and adults.

A sweet book, but perhaps more appealing to sentimental adults than kids.

This feels like it is based on Douglas’s life experience. This is a beautiful book about family and sharing a common bond.

Douglas (yes, the character is named Douglas) is at his great Aunt Mary’s house taking care of the rosebush. Aunt Mary explains that my caring for the plant, a little piece of the plant will grow inside him and a little bit of him will grow inside the plant. She then explains that generations of her family have taken care of the same rose bush. His grandfather, she as a child and his father as a child. They are all there. It’s a nice family history piece. When she smells the roses, she is reminded of all of her family.

I love this beautiful story. I love this idea that something connects us through the generations by the way we care for it. If you take this idea globally, it connects each and every person who takes care of the Earth we live on. It is the great connection of everyone.

Our family has a type of ground cover that has been passed to all the families on my mother’s side and it came from my great grandmother’s house. My grandmother had it and all her kids have it and now some of the grandkids have it. My brother still has some growing in his yard. It’s neat to think of the family links through the plant. We have grown together.

The artwork is lovely. The colors change during the flashback portion of the story and it makes me want to go and smell the roses.

The nephew didn’t quite know what to make of this story. He thought it was cool, but it was only about flowers. He asked, isn’t that what pictures are for. I told him pictures are living and there is something special about taking care of something. He gave this 3 stars, somewhat reluctantly. It wasn’t the kind of story he likes, but he sort of likes it.

Aunt Mary's rosebush has been part of her family for years. As the family remembers to look after it, part of them goes into the rose. Aunt Mary explains the story of the rose, and the family history, to young Douglas. A true story of the author's family - he still has part of Aunt Mary's rose in his own garden, being tended by his family.
