This was a solid start to an epic fantasy series & I can't wait to see what the rest of the series has to hold. The world building was probably my favorite part of this book. It was done SO WELL.

I might have to downgrade this to 3 stars later. It was a 3.5ish read for me. It was pretty predictable and kind of slow, but I liked the melding of history and fantasy. I would have liked to see more action and actual story, what we got was a lot go angst.

Ended up putting it down in the middle of it. I just couldn't get through it.

Wait. Before you read this, go and read the novellas by this author!! Highly recommend devouring those first to avoid preliminary confusion and increase overall coherency.

This was such a bright, vibrant novel capturing Macedon in all its pain and glory. I had very many misgivings about this initially, with fears of an amateur writing style to high expectations I was sure would remain unmet. But I was greatly surprised.

Immediately, you are thrown into the lives and personal distresses of each of the characters, as they battle (sometimes physically!) their own demons and stay afloat amongst the politics reigning in the court. We see the beginning makings of the greatest leader and battle strategist this world has ever known, a complex character beautifully woven by Herman.

As a lover of all things history and all things fantasy, this novel fit into my perfect niche, creating a gorgeous blend of intrigue and magic. I recommend this for any fantasy fans, lovers of Falling Kingdoms & Throne of Glass especially, pick this book up and enjoy the adventure that awaits.

Don’t waste your time, it’s not good. This has spoilers but i want to make sure that u know this book is bad. And very unoriginal.
mc- blah kinda fell for her brother before she knew it was her brother
love interest- very mid and dies
other love interest- is gay so loves her brother hot though
twin brother- got a toxic mother and a weird sister
toxic mother- very evil stepmother vibes but horny and has snakes (that’s the only way i can describe the bitch)

*i also read this series like a year ago so i’m not sure exactly what happens i know what happened and that it was a waste of time*

I have saved you from reading a sucky book your welcome

I started it and I wanted to keep going but my dislike towards the characters in the first chapter just stopped me from continuing.
