Flavia de Luce is one of my all-time favorite characters. I have loved every one of Alan Bradley's Flavia books and was so excited to read this one after thinking the last book had been written five years ago.
While Flavia's sharp tongue, intelligence, and knowledge of chemistry and poisons were much the same as in previous books, she has grown up a lot since we last saw her. It's a little bittersweet to see her leaving her childhood as she grows into a teenager. But, Undine, Flavia's mini-me, is just as charming and keeps the child sleuth part of the series intact.
The plot for this book was darker and more complicated than previous books. It was a little hard for me to follow (maybe because I haven't read a Flavia book in years and have forgotten the purpose and origin of the Nide?). Also, I read this book instead of listening to the audiobook. One of the things I love most about the Flavia books is listening to the narrator, who does such a fantastic job of bringing Flavia and all of the characters to life.
If you love Flavia, you have to read this book too.

I read these out of order and realized I missed a whole lot of things, so back to Book 4 I go!
I couldn’t wait for the next installment of Flavia’s adventures. This did not disappoint but it also felt as if Bradley was setting her up for the future now that she’s not a little girl anymore…
