If there was a church dedicated
to all things 80s Fandom, this would be the Bible and the nerds and geeks would be patron saints. This book, while a slow starter in my opinion, picks up steam to become quite an engaging adventure. Will Wheaton does an excellent and skillful job as narrator, which added to the experience. Some may find this story to be a bit tedious and laden with references, but if you can put that aside then you're in for a treat.

I loved this book! I saw the movie previously and was hesitant to read the book because I thought it would be just like the film….however the movie could not be farther from the book, in the best way! This was a suspenseful, enchanting, and worthwhile book to read. I highly recommend.

I really enjoyed this book. I think it's a very beautiful portrayal of the gaming community and an ode to pop culture. It was researched really well and it was just an absolute joy to immerse myself to the story even though I have little to no connection to the world.

I was a bit hesitant to read the book having seen the film, but the storyline was actually quite different to the film adaptation and brought more layers to the story. I listened to the audiobook read by Wil Wheaton and it just really brought the story to life in all the best ways possible.

All this being said, there was some problematic language and transphobia that were left completely unaddressed, which I found really problematic considering the target age and audience of this book. So not a five star but really good read.

The story itself was interesting, and the book was at its best when it was focusing on the quest and all the nostalgia that came with it. Unfortunately the characterisation and dialog were both really, really terrible. Every time Parzival and Art3mis spoke I wanted to throw the book out the window, honestly. Overall an entertaining but also uniquely frustrating read.

I liked this a lot! The story was great, the characters were funny, I liked the ‘80s references. I think it could have done a little bit better with the representation of women and people of color. Also I’m not a big fan of the benevolent billionaire trope so that was another thing I didn’t love. Last complaint, a lot of the riddles and things that were supposedly so difficult that no one could figure them out for years seemed really obvious. All-in-all, the writing isn’t perfect but it’s a fun book that I enjoyed reading.

This book had a potential to be even better than it is by cutting out the half-assed romance storyline and building on the apocalyptic/social issues/eco crisis going on and working out how to actually deal with that rather than running away from it!
