really liked the last third, but the beginning felt a bit too much like acotar to me, or like a bit too cliche? idk, but I liked that the author included a note on Persian mythology in the end, that was pretty interesting

Phew I am on a roll baby. Anyways this was so great!!! I mean sure Soraya did a few things that might be stupid in hindsight but I mean she was very sheltered throughout her life so I understand.
The subtle enemies to lovers with Parvaneh was simply <3<3.
Also
the way Azad was so manipulate even I was bamboozled. But maybe that’s the bloodlust talking idk
Finally I have to say that I loved
the fact that Soraya got her powers back towards the end. Just when I was thinking Oh her powers sure weren’t developed the author was like BAM
Honestly I’m glad I finally got around to reading this. Very much worth it.

“Stories always begin the same way: There was and there was not.”

---

"Girl, Serpent, Thorn" reads as a fairytale with a twist.
It's the story of a princess that cannot touch anyone because they drop dead. It's an interesting concept with a lot of potential but the way it was executed was a little weird for me.

Let's start with the characters. The three MCs had a good balance between them, I felt that Soraya was the weaker one simply because sometimes her indecision dragged the pace.
Also, I wish the villain was less evident, I was expecting more from that reveal.

Regarding the plot, the idea it's great, but everything important happens in the second half, making the first part exposition only.

All in all, I think the author has a lot of potential. Especially since she was able to put together a fantasy world in one book, which is a rare thing.

💫Plotline was very interesting and different, I like the fantasy element.

💫Takes on a modern take including topics like LGBTQ.

💫Resonated with character in some part,  e.g. searching for feeling of belonging.

📈Female lead was annoying, she was incredibly indecisive and lacked will power to think.

📈She was made weak for character development, but she was made TOO weak. There were times she could have done more, but she didn't.

A sleeping beauty retelling! With Persian influence?! Wow I really enjoyed this! I love how the romance was subtle but had a nice feel to it and that the parent wasn’t entirely useless and that a man wasn’t the one to step through and save the day.

Overall Thoughts:
⁕ Bashardoust writes about grief, loneliness and loss SO WELL! I really was taken aback by how artfully she utilized the characters to create conflict centered around these themes.

⁕ Soraya’s development as the main character is solid. I thought it was particularly clever how Bashardoust juxtaposed two of the minor characters to show the alternative “paths” Soraya could take, and used her understanding of them to help her grapple with her inner conflict.

⁕ Some of the plot developments felt a little too convenient, a little too easy. As terrible as it sounds, I wanted the characters to suffer just a little more before being saved. It didn’t feel as gratifying as I would have liked when they were.
