I really liked this. Yes, the pacing could’ve been more even, but the concept was solid and I enjoyed the story!  I, like many other reviewers, could’ve done without the romance subplot; but those issues aside, I thought the story was well done and it certainly drew me in quickly and thoroughly.

The history was fascinating and I have a new appreciation for how difficult (and horrifying) living with the remnants (and current iterations) of slavery and redlining and stolen land must be 😞

So the actual "twist" was pretty good but the pacing was extremely slow, and dragged on A LOT. I thought about giving up on it several times but powered through it because I heard great things about the ending. The first 100 pages or so just felt like meaningless conversations, at about 180 pages, things start to speed up. So I have mixed feelings about this one, I really wanted to love it but it was just okay.

I enjoyed both Sydney's and Theo's POVs. It took a bit too long for the plot to really "get going", IMO, and I considered DNF'ing. However, the moments of sudden tension were effective, and the final 20% of the book was very fun! It was like Alyssa Cole snapped her fingers and went "alright, it's the last stretch, let's pull out all the craziness". I just wish the story had better pacing overall so that the finale didn't feel so rushed.

I overall enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the writing of this book. My favorite parts of the story were discussing the history of gentrification and going in depth on the horrors of the people who live in the neighborhoods. I will say the pacing was a little off. The beginning was a bit slow, but the ending felt REALLY rushed. I thought the middle had the best pacing. The mystery started to pick up and pieces were starting to come together, but then it kind of snowballed at the end. I'm definitely adding more Alyssa Cole to my TBR!

Loved this book. Loved the (kinda expected) romance subplot because—to me—you can never go wrong with a little love. My only real issue is that the antagonists in the book were really exaggerated, and despite the fact that the issue tackled in this book is very real, the perpetrators came across kinda cartoonish in my opinion.

Still, an interesting book! I learnt a lot about Brooklyn and the issue of gentrification.
