Just incredible

This book is extremely well written. The prose was beautiful and the pace of it dragged you along like a current of a river

I really enjoyed this book. A lot of the reviews on the cover say that it's a bright, shining book full of life, and while it is true that the characters are brought to life beautifully (my favourite of which being Agnes because 1. She was written so well and 2. Witch. That's cool.), it seemed to me like a book that weeps and mourns as much as it creates characters and life. The book is ultimately about death, and the death of a child. A lot of it is near infuriating, because as much as you know the ending, you don't want to know the ending, and the rest is like peeling an orange of sadness. Very nicely written sadness, though, so that's good. It is tough going at times, but worth a read.

“He has, Agnes sees, done what any father would wish to do, to exchange his child’s suffering for his own, to take his place, to offer himself up in his child’s stead so that the boy might live.”

Prose is beautiful. Subject matter is tough. Grief over loss of a child is not something I will ever seek out. Made Shakespeare seem like a colossal twit.

this was a little slow going at times but the writing was just so lyrical and atmospheric and i enjoyed the non linear narrative structure, an absolutely gorgeous book.

I really enjoyed this, particularly the writing in the final third. Lovely idea for a novel to speculate this forgotten story and give voice to the women and kids of a family with such a significant patriarch.
