I like the series premise - China, Russia and the U.S. race each other to extend their empires into space. This book focuses on Chinese colonists on Mars, trapped between a hostile planetary environment and a paranoid, arbitrary central command. But the book lacks likable or interesting characters. I stuck with it for the developing mystery, but ultimately it wasn't satisfying.
