A fantastic horror story about gentrification of minority neighborhoods. Ezra Claytan Daniels delivers another solid graphic novel and this time takes a step back from art duties to just write it. Ben Passmore does a great job on the art. At first I didn’t dig the shape of the book, but the story worked in tandem with the format so it ended up being a plus.

Really enjoyed this one- couldn't put it down so I stayed up late last night reading. Lots of good talk about gentrification and white people being white people.

For the first read a few years ago I gave it 5 stars. With this second read I am doing 4.5. I still love this graphic novel. The social commentary is spot on. I often identified with Darla, especially in relation to her at times shitty white best friend. The sci-fi horror aspects had my skin feeling itchy and gross and had me squirming in my seat, fantastic elements. I absolutely love the art style and the color coding.

I did however have a few issues, hence the half a star drop. Some of the dialoge scenes seemed a tad awkward and forced. I imagine that was the point, but they didn't read well for me. I also wish we could have gone into more depth about the creature and Jay Jay. That part of the story felt a bit rushed.

Lastly, while I do love the color coding it also didn't work well for a few scenes. Particularly some scenes towards the end when the characters were the exact same color as the background.

Even with this issues I still enjoy this graphic novel and will do a second reread here soon (for book club). I highly recommend this to anyone!

This is honestly one of the strangest things I’ve ever read and I have no idea how to rate it. I liked the concept and I love the “building is alive” trope, but it felt too short for me to really be invested in the characters.
