Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears is a picture book written by Verna Aardema and illustrated by Leo and Diane Dillon. This story is a cumulative book, meaning the next page will have the text from the previous page and then some. In this story a mosquito annoys a lizard, who puts sticks in his ears which frightens another animal and eventually causes panic throughout the jungle. Finally, an owlet dies which angers the mama owl to the point where she will not wake the sun. The animals finally decide to hold court to figure out the reason for all the panic. They figure out that it is the mosquitoes fault so he buzzes in people’s ears to find out if they are still mad at him.

This book also won the Caldecott Award in 1976 for its beautifully crafted illustrations. This book is a wonderful resource for the teaching of cause and effect and shows how just one thing can lead to a widespread panic in a small community.

Okay folktale set in Africa with interesting art. But repetitive a kin to Piggy-won't-go-over-the-style or one-little-goat and a bit boring.

Why do mosquitos buzz in people's ears? Through this traditional West African tale, Verna Aardema shows us the real reason mosquitoes buzz in people's ears. This beautifully illustrated piece of traditional literature would be a great way to expose students to stories that have been passed down for many generations in a culture that is different from their own. I loved this book, especially the ending.

What a wonderful African story! In the artwork, be sure to keep your eye on the owl. There's a little side-story with her going on in the background.
